Interview by The Guild ✨

Dauernd Dürer

The Guild

In your own words, what’s the difference between artist vs NFT artist? Do you feel there’s a difference?

Niels

No there is no difference, art is art, but I do see a difference in the art world vs the NFT space. In the art world we pretend that it is all about quality whereas the NFT space is all about community. That is a misconception, the art world too is all about community, but it’s more elite. Elite meaning a handful of people dictate what is good to a crowd that submits to it. This is a tribal phenomenon of course and I am sure it will have its place in the NFT space sooner or later. Elite also means having more knowledge, experience, financial means and control over the infrastructure of the arts.

The cool thing about the NFT space is that the art world is merely a guest. This new community is successful by its own: making money, building a new culture, having fun! It is SO refreshing to me!!

The Guild

What/who are your biggest inspirations?

Niels

I am inspired by the visual language of the Middle Ages. I love illuminated manuscripts, gothic architecture, heraldic shields and medieval art in itself. The Middle Ages were horrific, funny, divine, frightening, overwhelming. I just love it!

The Guild

What’s your favourite tool as an artist and why?

Niels

I use a variety of tools. I make paintings, drawings, ceramics, digital art, installations and even site specific work. But above all I love to draw. I create my digital art using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.

The Guild

Can art change the world?

Niels

Remember Charlie Hebdo? Do you see how powerful a single drawing can be? Yes art can and HAS changed the world lots of times. We are obligated to do whatever it takes to change it for the better. Let’s go! 💪
